Plot summary The story is set in the 12th century in India, and is inspired by the ancient Indian story, the Ramayana. The story is about two princes, Rama and his younger brother Lakshmana. Both of them are raised in the forest by their mother, who had her eyes set on her elder son to inherit the throne. Years later, Sita, the only princess in all of India, is kidnapped by a demon called Ravana and brought to the Island of Lanka to be his wife. Sita becomes the Goddess of the Forest, in the form of Goddess Lakshmi. Ravana, along with his brother Vibhishana, plots to kill Rama. Vibhishana is the Prime Minister of Lanka, and therefore has the power to pass laws, to introduce new laws, and to interpret the law. Meanwhile, the two princes have been together for years and are sworn brothers. There is a prophecy that the brave Rama will help the people of India and defeat the demon Ravana, and his brother, Lakshmana, will take his place as a guardian of the forests of India. Rama and Lakshmana discover the conspiracy of Ravana, and their friendship begins to fracture. A group of bards who sing of past legends, known as the Valmiki bards, want Rama to go back to his kingdom, to rule as the rightful king. A war ensues in which Rama fights Ravana and his armies, and finally, defeated, Ravana is trapped on the island of Lanka with his brother Vibhishana, and the gods destroy his army. Rama sends his brother to kill Ravana, as well as his brother, Vibhishana. In the aftermath, Rama and his brother return to Ayodhya, their kingdom, and are welcomed as heroes, and the city is renamed as Ayodhya, in their honor.
